The Calhoun School, a progressive pre-K through 12th grade private school, occupies a nine-story building located on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The school comprises an original 1973 five-story concrete and travertine base and a four-story expansion designed by FXFOWLE in 2005. The expansion provided the school with a regulation-sized gymnasium, specialty “labs,” and a black box performance space. After a feasibility study and review of the school's long-term planning, and exploration of various options for further expanding the facility, FXFOWLE's 2014 renovation design focuses on relocating and reorganizing existing spaces for greater efficiency and repositioning. By expanding the building footprint and relocating the ground floor library to the lower level, the school was able to relocate the cafeteria to the ground floor and create a much-need multi-purpose area. The design of the new building entry, lobby, cafeteria, and library celebrates the mid-century modern aesthetic of the original building, while bringing natural daylight into interior spaces and re-engaging the ground and lower level spaces with the neighborhood.
